The small town of Vienne, located in the isère rhône-Alpes, contains many unique monuments of history and architecture of the Roman period. This circumstance, probably you can compare it with other major French cities – Lyon and Arles, in which also many testimonies of the epoch.

The Romans conquered the area, which is modern Vienne, in the first century BC and began to arrange it according to their ideas of architecture and urban planning.

One of the surviving buildings of this period is the temple of Augustus and Libya, which was also built in the I century BC as a symbol of Imperial power in the conquered Rome lands. The Church is named specimen of ancient architecture, in a great degree preserved.

Under the mountain Pipa Romans built a theatre, which was considered one of the largest in France. Its capacity was about 13 thousand people. He excelled, for example, the Roman amphitheatre in Arles, accommodating up to eight thousand people, and the ancient theatre of fourvière hill in Lyon, which could take up to ten thousand people at a time.

Bienski the theatre was restored in 1938. In addition to its historical value, this attraction is a tourist attraction as the viewing platform. With the upper tier of the theater you can enjoy panoramic views of the Vienne river and scenery. Currently the Roman theatre is the venue for cultural events such as the annual summer jazz festival.

In Vienne is also worth visiting the archaeological Museum, where exhibits of Gallo-Roman period, found during archaeological excavations. Studies were conducted on the right Bank of the Rhone, where it was discovered the remains of ancient buildings – theatre and a temple dedicated to the goddess Cybele.
