Reszel is a town in the Warmian-Masurian voivodship, located in the Lake district on the banks of the river Saini 55 km South-East of Olsztyn. Small in size and population of the city is known for its large number of historical monuments.

Originally Prussian settlement, built by the tribe of Bartana, was conquered by Teutonic knights in 1241. The locals managed to hit Reszel the knights for five years, but later the city was finally taken by the German crusaders. City rights Reszel received in 1337.

In 1372 began large-scale construction of defensive walls and towers with three city gates. Reszel has become the third largest city of Warmia. In the early sixteenth century on the initiative of Bishop Luke (relative Nicolaus Copernicus) in Reszel resumed the construction of fortifications, which helped prevent the capture of the city in 1520. With the sixteenth century begins the greatest flowering of Reszel. In the city open educational institutions, conducted numerous workshops of painting.

After the partition of Poland, the town came under the rule of Prussia. The castle was turned into a prison and a warehouse for grain. In the early nineteenth century Reszel was badly damaged during a devastating fire. From this period the city began to pursue a series of failures: new fires, destruction, financial complexity.

Fortunately, during the Second world war Reszel practically has not suffered, has been conserved to the present day magnificence of the city's architecture.

The main attraction is the Gothic Bishop's castle, built in 1350-1401 years on the steep side of the hill on the right Bank of the river by the Teutonic order. The Gothic Church of St. Peter has preserved a unique interior. Other notable monuments can be called the Church of St. John and the convent of St. Catherine – buildings of the 15th and 16th century.
