The St. Stephen's Cathedral and the tower Photo: St. Stephen's Cathedral and the tower

It is believed that the inhabitants of Szeged is called the St. Stephen's Cathedral "Grain market" since 1880. However, the name is mentioned even before the flood of 1879. The main attraction of the area - water tower, the functionality of which grew simultaneously with its attractiveness, was designed and built by Solardom Zielinski by the end of 1904. This architectural monument is made of reinforced concrete and is designed to store 1004, 8 cubic meters of water. During the construction of the tower were used advanced technology of the time (including the use of concrete), making it a unique facility in Hungary in that period. The height of the water tower with a flagpole, also made of reinforced concrete, is 54, 9 meters.

If in past centuries, St. Stephens square served as a market, now it is a memorial Park and a leisure Park. In turn, the Water tower, although it is a popular tourist destination, has retained its original function. In addition, the tower is a beautiful observation deck, which offers views of Szeged, Tisza river, the vastness of the great plains. Inside the tower there is a Foucault Pendulum, which, as is known, demonstrates the Earth's rotation around its axis.
