Cathedral of our lady, the bell tower which rises 123 meters above the historic centre of Antwerp, is considered as the symbol of the city. It was built in Gothic style during two centuries (XIV – XVI cent.) on the site of an old Romanesque Church. However, the building is still considered unfinished. The project of the Cathedral was designed by father and son Allami. From the sixteenth century contemporaries admired the beauty of the Cathedral, comparing it to the spire with lace and bell modulations.
From the initial appearance of the Cathedral remains extremely small: the exterior image of the Madonna and several murals. The Church has survived quite a lot of turmoil throughout its existence: fires, destruction of works of art by iconoclasts, shelling and looting during the French revolution. The bell tower of the Cathedral is a UNESCO world heritage site. The Church is crowned with three towers – North (bell tower), South and lantern. The North tower is open to tourists, however, solely under the scrutiny of the employees of the Cathedral.
The interior of the collection embodies the traits of different styles: from Gothic to Rococo, which was the result of numerous restoration and rehabilitation works. Inside the Duomo is a huge space, its interior is solemn, and the walls are decorated with works of world famous artist Peter Rubens, as well as paintings by Martin de Vos, Jacob de Backer and Otto bath Sahajwalla. Two paintings by Rubens also has world heritage status.
The Cathedral of Antwerp is not the last place in music history. Here have served and worked with many famous composers and organists. In the Cathedral there are two bodies, and the age of the main of them - more than 130 years. It's a 90 registers, and it covers an area of three floors. The choir of the Cathedral did not interrupt its activities even during hostilities. Women's and men's choirs performed songs almost every Sunday morning during mass. And every year, go on tour.
