The Church Of St. Nicholas Photo: Church Of St. Nicholas

The Church of St. Nicholas of Myra is an ancient Church in Brighton, UK, the oldest building in the city. Mention of it is found in the Domesday Book of 1086. Not clearly determined, where at that time was a Church, but most likely in the same place as the current. Brighton was a small fishing village, which was located on the coast, and the location of the Church on the hill is perfectly logical.

In its present form, the Church of St. Nicholas appeared in the middle of the XIV century. For the construction of the tower were probably used stones left over from the ruined old Church, and inside there is the baptismal font, carved from stone in 1170 In the XIV century were built the massive tower on the West side, the altar and the nave. In the early fifteenth century was added a side chapel.

In 1514, during the RAID of the French invaders, the village was burned to the ground, but the Church, which stood in the distance, survived. In 1703 and 1705 G. during the strongest storms with the Church blew off the roof.

In the eighteenth century in England there was a fashion for the treatment of sea water, and the small town of Brighton is becoming very popular and fashionable resort. Here stops the Prince Regent, future king George IV. The city's population is growing rapidly, and the only district in the Anglican Church can no longer accommodate all the parishioners. In 1853 the architect Richard Cromwell carpenter began reconstruction. Were demolished additional side galleries, but the Church itself expanded, there was a place for the organ. In the second half of the nineteenth century, the Church continues to change. Appear beautiful stained glass Windows by renowned artist Charles Kempe.

Since the end of XVIII century on the tower is the belfry with 10 bells. Around the Church is an ancient cemetery. Under the oldest gravestone rests captain Nicolas Tattersal, which in 1651 was taken aboard his ship of king Charles II and helped him to move to France.

Despite the fact that the Church of St. Nicholas is not the main parish in Brighton, britancy love her and affectionately called "our mother-Church."
