Archaeological Museum of Komotini was officially founded in 1962 and based on archaeological collections gathered a group of students one of the city schools, where, in fact, ancient artifacts and stored in 1937-1962. In 1962, the collection was housed in a separate building, but due to the constant replenishment of the Treasury of the Museum required urgent expansion of exhibition space. In 1968-1970 specially for the Museum by renowned architect Konstadinidis of APIs was built a new building and today is considered one of the most impressive modern structures in the city.
Unique relics, exhibited in the Archaeological Museum, were collected throughout Thrace, and cover a huge time period, from the Neolithic to the Byzantine period, perfectly illustrating the history of cultural development of the region, and stressing the undeniable influence of the ancient Greeks. The main exhibition includes artifacts from the prehistoric settlements, Greek colonies, Roman settlements and burial grounds. The exhibition is presented in chronological order and in accordance with the territorial affiliation of ancient artifacts.
In the Archaeological Museum of Komotini you can see ceramics and bronzes, sculpture, jewelry, coins, weapons, funerary artifacts, and much more. The most valuable item in the collection is undoubtedly a Golden bust of the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus (193-gg BC).
Since 1987, in the Archaeological Museum on a regular basis and offers educational programs for elementary and secondary schools.
Today the Archaeological Museum of Komotini is one of the most interesting sights of the city.
