The steam locomotive-monument Et 708-64 is on the railway station Volkhov-1, in the town of Volkhov, Leningrad region. The station was opened in the beginning of the twentieth century, in 1904, on the newly constructed line St. Petersburg – Vologda. Originally called the Zvanka, and in 1934 it was renamed Volkhov.

Steam power plant 708-64 refers to the locomotives of the series E. the Axial formula engine – 0-5-0 (locomotive with 5-TEW driving axles in the 1st rigid frame). Was built in the USSR and operated here. The length of the locomotive is 11456 mm, operating weight – 85, 6 t, the coupling weight is the same, 2 cylinders, the design speed is 55 km/h. Has steam distribution mechanism of Wallchart.

This locomotive after the first breakthrough of the siege of Leningrad delivered part of the ammunition and food to the Finnish station. It happened on 7 February 1943. The locomotive was owned by the depot town of Volkhov. After the locomotive was transferred to the reserve of the Ministry of Railways (MPs) and housed at the station Belgorod southern railway. Thanks to the initiative volhovstroevsky railroad veterans after negotiations with the IPU, it was decided to bring the locomotive back to the Volkhov to install it as a monument.

Now this locomotive is presented in the original memorial to the exploits of railwaymen. He is on the platform of the Volkhov station. In order to raise the locomotive on a pedestal, was built a temporary railway line, because at the time there was no lifting design, capable of lifting such a heavy object.

On the Day of Victory of 1980 took place the solemn ceremony of opening the monument. The event was accompanied by a rally. The honour of opening the memorial was given to people who worked during the Second World war in his post, including the participants of the first flight from the mainland to Leningrad: M. S. Dyagilev, A. M. Alekseeva T. S. Ryazanov, and former Deputy chief depot repair G. A. Afanasyeva.
