Ensemble Pazaislis is located in Kaunas forest on the picturesque banks of the Nemunas river. Is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture in Europe.

Painlessly complex was built as a monastery Camaldoli hermit, established in 1667 by the Chancellor of the Grand Duchy by Christopher Sigmund Pacem. Designed by D. B. Frediani, P. Poutine and C. Poutine. The Church was consecrated in 1712 and named in honor of the Visitation of the blessed virgin Mary.

Painlessly ensemble clearly laid out on the principle of axial symmetry. The axis crosses the magnificent arch gate, alley, elongated one-story building of Gostiny Dvor (Foresteria) with corbels and with a Central two-storey gatehouse area, wide courtyard, the sides of which are two buildings of office appointment, the Church with two buildings of the monasteries, galleries and private patios, a garden with houses of monks (eremitani) and three-level tower.

In the beginning of XVIII century, during the Northern war, and in subsequent years (the Patriotic war of 1812) complex Pazaislis was almost destroyed. After the national uprising in Lithuania and Poland was defeated in 1831, the monastery Camaldoli was closed, and its buildings and property were transferred based here old believer monastery. At that time the Church was destroyed seven altars of marble, destroyed statues, partly rewritten or even Zabelina frescoes of the buildings was converted.

The basis of the composition Pugilistica ensemble is the Church whose width is 30 meters and the height (without the cross) is 49 meters. This two-tower, hexagonal building, covered with colorful hexagonal cupola with a lantern. The interior of the temple is characterized by its originality, and the finish is exceptionally high artistic qualities.

The entrance area, the space of the Church, chancel, covered with impenetrable dome, and the choir is directed along the longitudinal axis, and four chapels, the sacristy and the Chapter hall are located symmetrically on the sides. The feeling of elation and joy create accentuated the verticality of the interior decoration, marble wall decoration black and pink colors, numerous frescoes and decorative moldings in the technique of stucco and harmonious combination of all architectural elements. Special attention deserve the bas-reliefs, created by sculptor I. Merlo, and expressive frescoes by the Florentine painter K. M. A. Palloni "Death of St. Christopher", "the adoration of the Magi", "the Dream Romuald", "Ascension of the virgin Mary". From the frescoes and stucco stucco, executed in the arcade, after 1831, until now little has been preserved.

In 1921 abandoned pažaislis monastery ensemble was handed over to the authorities of Lithuania to the sisters of the congregation of St. Casimir, who arrived from Chicago.

Pažaislis monastery ensemble was known not only prayerful lifestyle Camaldolese and its architecture, but also the image of the Mother of God with Child, belonging to the brush of an unknown artist. This image is popularly known camaldolesi picture of the virgin Mary. In the Soviet period the image was moved to Kaunas Basilica, and in 2000 it was solemnly returned to Pazaislis.

The monastery is now being restored. It is inhabited by a few nuns of the congregation of St. Casimir. At the same time it can be visited with a guided tour. Every year it organizes Painlessly music festival.

Extraordinary harmony and expressiveness of the composition of the ensemble Pazaislis make it one of the peaks of architectural Baroque era in Europe.
