The historic centre of Bormio, with its ancient palaces, towers, churches, chapels, cobbled streets, squares and fountains serves as a living reminder of the glorious past of the city, a former important trade point between Milan and Northern Alpine areas. Bormio is a popular ski resort, and its carefully restored historical center partially turned into a pedestrian zone.
Most of the buildings date from the 15th-16th centuries – the heyday of Bormio, when they were built impressive churches and palazzos were frescoed and decorated with exquisite stone portals. At the same time a noble merchant family was first erected high towers as a demonstration of his power.
Today, tourists can immerse in the atmosphere of the past, going for a walk through the ancient centre of Bormio. The best place to start your journey on the via Roma. In the beginning of this elegant street lined with palaces, is a beautiful Romanesque Church of San Vitale, with a wooden altar-piece, 14-th century. Via Roma leads to Piazza Cavour, better known as Piazza del Querci, she has always been the social centre of Bormio.
