Female Pokrovsky monastery, founded in 1364, is located on the lower side of the Heater. The monastery is famous as a place of exile objectionable to members of noble families and Royal families. In the basement of the Cathedral of Intercession of the virgin is the tomb, where among other "crowned" nuns buried the wife of Grand Prince of Moscow Vasily III Solomonia Saburova, the daughter of Ivan III of Alexander, fifth wife of Ivan the terrible Anna Vasilchikov. Among exiled to the monastery is the daughter of Xenia Boris Godunov and the first wife of Peter I Eudoxia Lopukhina. In one-storey stone building of the XVII century restored interior official chamber, the dungeon which was monastic prison.
The ensemble consists of a white stone fence with 9 towers including two towers with stone tents, unique gate Church of the Annunciation, Cathedral of the intercession with the attached bell tower, refectory Church of the Holy Conception, several monastery buildings.
The center of the monastery is St. Basil's Cathedral, which was built in 1518. Its white walls and ceramic flooring could create the impression underlined asceticism, but gorgeous icons and works of art of sewing, which is the pride of the Museum, made the interior a refined and festive. The Cathedral combines gallery belfry - original pillars the Church of the honest Origin of the wood of the cross, with a cupola. The tent above it appeared in the late seventeenth century.
Near the Cathedral was built the refectory with the Church. This is a large two storey building, decorated with a pattern of red brick. Hall refectory is very spacious, with powerful arches, resting on one pillar in the center of the room. The appearance of the composition finishes hexagonal belfry. The house adjoins a small Conception Church, marked on the outside only elegant cupola.
The Holy gate with the gate Church of the Annunciation, built in 1510-1518 years - a kind of fortress tower with two arches - great for travel and small for pedestrians. This unique specimen of ancient architecture, combining the functions of the castle tower and the Church. Actually the Church sits on top of the square tower is a small quadrangle, surrounded on two sides by a gallery with arched openings. In composition it repeats a large Pokrovsky Cathedral, though more richly decorated.
The whole complex Pokrovsky monastery is under the protection of UNESCO.
