Fort San Pedro Photo: Fort San Pedro

Fort San Pedro is a military defence structure, built by Spanish conquistadors under the leadership of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. The Fort is located on the territory of the Plaza Independencia in Cebu city, the capital of the Philippine province. The construction of this Fort was started in 1565 and was completed only two centuries later, in 1738. Today, this triangular Bastion is considered the oldest Fort in the Philippines, moreover, it is also the smallest. During the long years of its history, Fort San Pedro was not only a defensive structure, but also a stronghold of the revolutionary movement of the Filipino people in the late 19th century, prison and even a zoo.

The Fort is triangular in shape, two sides of which face the sea, and the third to land. "Sea" the walls were fortified with guns and wooden fence. The strengthening of the Fort was called La Concepcion, Ignacio de Loyola and San Miguel. The total area of the Fort was only a little more than 2 thousand square meters, the height of the walls reached 6, 1 meter and a thickness of 2, 4 meters. Length of fence was equal to 380 meters. The walls of the Fort were of unequal length, as in the one that faces the city, is the entrance to the fortress. The entire Fort was defended by 14 guns, most of which have survived to the present day.

Still relatively little is known about how the activity was carried out on the territory of the Fort from the mid-16th century until 1739, when king Philip II of Spain demanded detailed information about the island of Cebu and its fortified structures. In the late 19th century the Fort was renovated in the framework of the program for the development of Cebu city. In the days of American domination in the Fort was used as military barracks in the USA which later - from 1937 to 1941 - was a school for local residents. During the Second World war within the walls of the Fort refuge Japanese residents of Cebu, and after the war there was stationed a military camp.

In 1957 Cebu the public was alarmed by the report of a possible demolition of the Fort San Pedro – it was planned to construct a new building of city administration. Then began the movement to protect the historical monument, which activists have reached the highest echelons of power. Fortunately, the fortress managed to defend, but a few years on its territory is located the zoo, which was led by local religious sect. By 1968, the walls of the Fort and its facade came in terrific condition. In the short term plan was developed for the restoration of the structure, and the zoo it was decided to move to another place. The restoration process was long and tedious: in order to recreate as close as possible to the original appearance of the Fort, were used corals, raised from the seabed. After a year and half were ready facade, main building, walkway and garden on the roof of the observation tower. In the main building housed the office of the Department of tourism, and in the Lieutenant's barracks Museum, which stores documents, drawings and sculpture of the Spanish period. The patio was turned into an outdoor theater, and around the Fort broke the Park, where he installed a huge statue of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and the Italian Explorer Antonio Pigafetta, member of the expedition of Magellan.
