Jaunpils castle is located in the same village, it is located approximately 50 km from the city of Jelgava, 25 km from Dobel. A local landmark is one of the few medieval castles of Latvia, preserved Yes our time. The castle was built in 1301 as a fortress of the Livonian order. The castle was founded by the master of the order Gottfried von horn.
The thickness of the walls is up to almost 2 meters, many believe that immured in the wall a lot of people. Generally this place once had is not of good fame, thanks to the owners of the castle family of the barons von der River. There is a legend which tells how the castle was inherited by the Baron River. According to legend, once lived landowner the River. He was very strong and was possessed by the devil. He had a very heavy chair, which even his two servants were hard to carry. So, in anger, he easily took the chair and walked with him as with a cane.
Once landowners were instructed to ride horses, how much territory they will be able to go round so many lands they will belong. The Baron River managed to overtake a large area from to Saldus Dobele and from Dobele to Tukums, Jaunpils, therefore, was right in the middle.
Of course, this is just a legend, and actually the Baron River received the Jaunpils castle in a different way. After the Livonian order was defeated, his last master Gotthard Kettler swore allegiance to the Polish king in 1561. King Sigismund Augustus appointed the head Kettler formed the Duchy of Courland. However, not all owners of the castle were content with the decision. Then Kettler concluded a military Alliance with the Baron River. By this arrangement Kettler for the assistance of the landowner rekka promised to give him certain district in perpetuity. Subsequently, the Duke of Courland States have not kept the promise, and then between Kettler and the River began an armed struggle that lasted nearly 10 years. As a result of this confrontation the River managed to get only Undersky district along with the fortress. Since that time, the family von der Recke (River, Recke) was the owner of this estate until 1920.
With this generation, von der Recke relate many stories and legends, most of them unpleasant, scary and evil. Don Matthias von der Recke and his descendants did not differ benevolence. For example, there is such a story: the Baron Mathias built a rectangular pad on his estate and he thinks its stone walls. There he put 300 Swedish prisoners of war brought from the war. They lived there under the open sky, performing all commercial and construction work in Underscan estate. When the need for additional manpower has disappeared, Baron Mathias all prisoners of war were herded into a barn and with his own hands set fire to it. He walked around the barn, warming his hands, and, in response to the cries of the dying, said, "Well, I hear the squeak of my mouse! ".
One of the descendants of Baron Mathias von der the River brought unprecedented telescope. He amused himself by peeping at laborers from the heat of the castle and scared their hideous screams in the most unexpected moment. There is even a story, telling about how one hired hand died of a broken heart. The Baron watched out for her, and when she lay down to rest, cried so that she died. It was rumoured that the devil tells Baron about everything that happens and has the nickname "Bloody River". Although themselves the River that nickname amused.
There is another story after which Jaunpils tried to get round, especially in bad weather. In fact, the younger brother of Baron terribly missed in the estate, especially during bad weather, when to do was absolutely nothing, why more it began to hit the bottle. Then the Baron ordered to build on his window feature, which howled an eerie voice in the rain and not allowed to "relax" with a bottle. Rumor has it that the younger brother quit drinking. This shit has been preserved to our time, but during the last war had damaged the mechanism through which he was making such a terrible cry. And the secret mechanism fails to disclose today.
Today in Underscan the lock swing public life. Here are often held various holidays, events, theatrical performances. The castle, surrounded on three sides by water, and its surroundings are picturesque and attractive tourist destination.
