Vasto – ancient town near Pescara. The first settlement at this place was founded in the 13th century BC, and the city itself, according to legend, was founded by the Greek hero Diomedes. However, today most of the surviving monuments of history and architecture in the city dates from the Middle ages.

Vasto was once one of the major cities of the nation frentani. It was founded on the Adriatic sea 9 km South of Punta della Penna. In Roman times it became a colony and was given the honored title of mun – prosperous and wealthy city. Talking about this extant ruins of a theatre, baths and other public buildings, decorated with numerous mosaics, statues and marble columns.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire Vasto was in the hands of the Byzantines, then the Franks and the Lombards, and finally, in the 11th century it was conquered by the Normans. And since the 13th century it was part of the Kingdom of Naples, which was later transformed into the Kingdom of the two Sicilies. In the 15th century in the city the rule family Calderas, on the initiative of which were built in the city, the castle and numerous defensive towers, which survived until our days, " Torre Bassano in Piazza Rossetti, the Torre Diomedes in the town of Vico Storto del Passero, Torre diamante in Piazza Verdi and Porta Catena.

Today Vasto especially famous for its beautiful churches – here you can admire the Cathedral of San Giuseppe, the churches of Santa Maria Maggiore, Sant'antonio, San Francesco di Paola and Santa Maria dal Carmine. Among them is the Church of Sant'antonio in it are perfectly preserved stucco era luxury Baroque. Apart from the fact that the churches are beautiful and deserve attention in their own right, they still can meet real works of art.

Besides the churches in Vasto deserve attention above lock and two aristocratic Palace – the Palazzo Caldora and Palazzo d'avalos. In the building last today houses the city Museum.
