Vransko lake is the largest freshwater lake on the island Cres, part of the natural Park. In Croatia it is the third largest and the world's sixth largest area of natural pond. The lake origin of depression, the deepest point – 61.5 meter below sea level.

The importance of Vransko Jezero is difficult to overestimate: it is a huge natural storage of fresh water and nourishes not only the island of Cres, but neighboring lošinj. Thus water Vransko Jezero so clean that before you get into the water, it is not subjected to sanitation and filtration. On the shores of the lake are prohibited to graze cattle, to use fertilizers and other chemicals, to arrange camping and litter.

Vransko lake is a unique place and a Paradise for birdwatchers. The lake and its surroundings in 1999 were declared a national Park. Here registered 249 species of waterbirds, more than a hundred nests in an area of the Park, of which 4 species are endangered in Europe, and 7 – Croatia. The lake is one of the last nesting sites of red herons, great and little egrets, pygmy cormorant. Wintering flock here more than a hundred thousand waterfowl. The reserve was incorporated in 1983 in the list of key European ornithological territories. In Branscom the lake, pike, carp, tench and even acne.

In ancient times the lake was called the Bucket of Blato. Historical and cultural finds in the area date back 2 thousand years BC Nature Park Vransko Jezero still hides a lot of secrets and is a permanent source of scientific discoveries. This area is associated with many legends, mostly terrible, about the creatures living in the water and the caves nearby. The story of the origin of the lake says that in his place before there was a field owned by two sisters Gavani. One of them, greedy and avaricious, decided to take over the earth alone and very cruelly treated poor sister. For heaven sent punishment – earthquake and flood. And local still believe that at the bottom of the lake are the remains of the destroyed castle, and before the storm I hear the bell ringing from the depths.
