Ulcinj is the southernmost town in Montenegro, is the center of the homonymous municipality. According to the legend, in Ultsinskoy fortress was held by pirates famous prisoner – Miguel de Cervantes. For a long time the city remained a pirate, even during the reign of the Ottoman Empire.
Attractions in the city are many, but the Church of St. Nicholas is a special structure.
The first mention of the Church of St. Nicholas in Ulcinj date from the late nineteenth century. However, the history of the Church began even earlier – in place before the building of the Church was a monastery, Dating from the XV century.
According to historical records, shortly before the moment when Ulcinj was liberated from the Turks (who were forced to surrender territory, as they suffered defeats in the Russo-Turkish war), in 1869 Orthodox believers Ulcinj built near White Mountain own temple.
Turkish law stated that no one erected in the city, the building could not exceed the height of the minaret of the mosque. The builders of the Church. Nicholas did a very resourceful: they built a spacious Church, dug deep into the earth. Thus the law was not violated.
Later the Church was converted into a mosque, but since 1890 it has again become Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas. Today the Church building is an exhibition ultistage archaeological Museum.
