Sao Miguel das Missoes is ancient ruins, located in the Brazilian province of Rio Grande do Sul. In Portuguese, the name means "the Mission of St. Michael". The ruins of são Miguel das Missoes are part of the UNESCO world heritage.

In the mid-17th century, Jesuit missionaries founded the mission of San Miguel das Missoes, intending to use it to convert the Guarani Indians to Christianity. The mission was founded near the Indian village of Fiasco. Later the mission was moved to its present location.

The mission at that time was inhabited by about 4,000 Indians to Christianity. In 1735 begins construction of the Baroque Church.

In 1750, Portugal handed over this territory to Spain. The Jesuits were ordered to leave the mission. After they refused to do so, they used the power of the Spanish army. Later Spanish troops seized all the lands são Miguel das Missoes.

In 1929 in the city of Santo ângelo, near Sao Miguel das Missoes, was built an exact copy of the Cathedral's mission.

In 1940 the Museum was opened in the mission. In the Museum you can see a large number of sculptures made of wood, depicting saints. They were cut by the Jesuits and the Indians. Some of the sculptures reach 2 meters in height.
