Boulevard Carnot Photo: Boulevard Carnot

Boulevard Carnot in Cannes is a brilliant street longer than two and a half kilometers, full of shops, houses, exquisite architecture. In southern cities such can be seen infrequently.

Magnificent street was invented by one man: banker, Henri Germain, the founder of the largest French Bank "credit Lyon". The banker loved the côte d'azur. In 1863 came to Cannes railway, and Germain had been bought for a pittance of land North of the train station, hoping for a successful real estate speculation. Architect Durand has developed a project unprecedented for a small town Avenue to twenty-six feet in width, with beautiful houses in the style of "Belle Epoque". Boulevard Foncier-Lones was inaugurated in 1883, a year later it was renamed in memory of President Sadi Carnot, who died at the hands of a terrorist.

Begins the Boulevard from the place de Gar, which is the railway station. The size is absolutely not impressed landside: steel path wisely hidden under the earth – no noise, no dirt.

Broad street features stylish architecture, partly reminiscent of Paris. Those are the two symmetrical buildings at numbers 11 and 12 on place Vauban – elegant with semicircular balconies and caryatids. Public buildings were erected in the neoclassical style. Despite numerous reforms and restructuring, they have kept their appointment until today: Savings Bank (building # 17), the courthouse (building # 19), lycée Carnot (house, No. 96, almost on the border of the city). Covered terrace Lyceum, founded in 1913, is similar to the monastic arcade. This is one of the best universities of France, the pride of Cannes.

Throughout the streets are planted with trees that provide dense shade. In the late nineteenth century in the middle of the Avenue ran the tram, but now the Boulevard is given to cars and pedestrians. The lower floors of these buildings is a continuous chain of shops, restaurants, cafes.

Completes the line (within Cannes) square bearing the same name – Carnot. In it you can see the equestrian statue of pink stone, commemorating the memory of andré Capron (1902-1929, was twice elected mayor of Cannes). Sitting on a horse politician remains a respected historical figure, although his name was linked to financial scandals.

After square Boulevard flows to the neighboring town of Le Cannet, keeping its name there. The architecture and place names of the Boulevard Carnot almost entirely refer to the end of XIX – beginning of XX century, the famous "Belle Epoque" in France, still not knowing the devastating world wars. But overshadowed him and the memory of another great era. Here was the famous "Napoleon road" – it returned to France, the Emperor went to Paris to the glitz and the thunder of the famous "hundred days" for all to leave the stage of history.
