The Avenue of Freedom-Charles de Gaulle airport is a pedestrian zone, close to Palace of festivals and Congress hall, equally beloved and tourists, and townspeople.
Wide space lined with plane trees, but it looks spacious. It lies between the monument to the fallen, towering in front of Cannes city hall and a charming fountain of the XIX century on the area of General de Gaulle. On the Avenue is another monument is here immortalized by Lord Henry brougham, Cannes without which, quite possibly, would not have become a fashionable resort.
It is believed that the Alley is very Provencal. Although just across the street, is the Palace of festivals and Congress hall, then slowly flows almost village life. Every morning (except Monday) on the streets selling flowers, and on weekends, open just two markets – arts and crafts and flea. And kanzi, and tourists scrutinize vintage trinkets and eyeing the paintings and Souvenirs. Walking with children flock to traditional carousel that is spinning opposite the monument to Lord Broom.
Closer to the town-hall is an ancient stage for bands – it was built in 1880 by the municipal architect Louis Urle. Graceful columns holding round the roof of the pavilion: at a time when the microphones didn't exist, the roof was needed not only as protection from the sun, but also to improve acoustics. Estrada is a historical monument, but is still used every year on 21 June, during the musical festival held throughout France, there are local orchestras, including the orchestra of the students of the Conservatory of Cannes.
Most people love the Avenue of Freedom due to the fact that there is a dedicated special area for playing pétanque. This Provencal national sport (throwing metal balls according to special rules) is very popular in Cannes. During the Cannes film festivals here in the Alleys of Freedom, usually the pétanque tournament among celebrities. In other months also play: if tourists are lucky, they'll find some inter-district competition. The audience sat on metal fences, chew sandwiches from a nearby kiosk, rooting for their team. And not to say that it is the center of a brilliant city.
