The history of the resurrection Cathedral, like many other Russian monasteries, has its legend. Bright Sunday afternoon on the Sheksna in Beloozero floated Moscow merchant with his goods. Suddenly the middle of the day quickly darkened, and the boat with goods merchant ran aground. The phenomenon of the merchant was very impressed and began to pray. Shortly before his eyes appeared a surprising picture: nearby mountain covered by forest was on fire, and the valley of the mountains began to emanate rays of bright light, which seemed to be pointed in the right path. The boat came down off the rocks and swam to the mountain of fire, soon the phenomenon disappeared. The merchant was badly shaken and went up on the mountain. His eyes appeared a magnificent view: in the thick forest-covered lowlands, unusual twists twisted river, and to the East stretched the silver ribbon of the river Sheksna. The merchant decided to mark this spot with a cross and a year came here to build a small chapel, which he was decorated with the Holy icon of the Resurrection. After some time to the chapel came two monks – Athanasius and Theodosius, who staged Cherepovets resurrection monastery. First Cherepovets abode mentioned in 1449, in the letter of grant of Mikhail Andreevich, Prince of Belozersk.
It is believed that the Foundation of the monastery was laid by the blessing of St. Sergius of Radonezh. The first rector of the resurrection monastery was St. Theodosius. The second rector was the name of the monk Athanasius, who was a disciple of St. Sergius. Athanasius was called the "Iron stick", because he always carried a Mace of iron to overcome the flesh.
A more precise date of the founding of the Cherepovets resurrection monastery, unfortunately, not known. Documents that could help in this matter, has not survived to our days. Although when comparing the known facts, one can assume that this event occurred at a time when the Department rules, the Bishop of Belozero, and Ignatius of Rostov, who held his post during with at 1355 1365 years.
