The Fado Museum in Lisbon is of particular value for music lovers of Fado, as well as for those interested in the culture and history of Portugal.
Fado (comes from the Latin "fatum", which means "destiny") is a special style of traditional Portuguese music. It's a street song, which is sung by one performer accompanied by two guitars, classical and Portuguese (a twelve-string guitar). In Fado is sung about fate, about love experiences of suffering. Fado is filled with sadness and bittersweet melancholy. The genre originated in the TWELFTH century, and was completed in the early nineteenth century. Today, there are two main centers of Fado in Lisbon and Coimbra.
The Fado Museum in Lisbon was opened in 1998 and is situated in a spacious and beautiful building. The exhibits of the Museum will tell a lot about the history of the genre. In this room shows a film about how the masters is the Portuguese guitar, and exhibited along the walls of the different models of guitars. There's also a café where you can enjoy a live Fado performance.
