The main symbol of stramberk is the imposing castle, built in the form of a tower, which the local inhabitants called the Pipe. Image of the castle replicated on numerous souvenir posters and postcards. Starý jičín castle can be seen from any point of the city, it immediately attracts attention and impresses with its appearance.
On the establishment of the castle there is a legend, confirming the presence in these places of the knights Templar. They say that in the beginning of XIV century the castle was founded by the Templars, finding an impregnable rock, which is part of the Beskidy mountains. But modern historians doubt this story and believe that the founders of the castle can be considered unknown Moravian aristocrats or gentlemen of Benesova. The castle was built with security mission: it was built on the border of the Moravian Principality. At the foot of the castle soon there was a small village, eventually turned into a city.
The height of the tower pipe, which was part of the castle complex, is 40 meters. From the observation deck located on the top of it, very good view of the surrounding territories. This review was a big advantage in the Middle ages, so the castle wanted to own many of the gentlemen. It was rebuilt, it was cared for, preventing decay. He was able to escape damage during the Hussite battles, but suffered greatly in the Thirty years ' war. Local residents saw such a conglomeration of useless stones, very happy and dispersed them, using as a building material. So would have deprived the city of its principal ornaments, if not a reconstruction of the nineteenth century. Unfortunately, the restoration was to be only a tower and some fragments of city walls.
