Quarter Macheda, which runs on the same street, is the old historic quarter of Palermo with many interesting attractions. So, in via Francesco Raimondi stands the Church of Sant'agostino, built in the 14th century in the Romanesque style. Its construction was sponsored by influential Sicilian family La groix, whose family crest today and can be seen on the facade of the building. The interior of the Church was redone in the Baroque style in the next century. The cloister of the temple, located to the left of the main entrance, in the style of Catalan Gothic. At its centre is a fountain, and in the house of the Chapter in one of the corners preserved furnishings 13th century. In the wall of the stairs leading from the side entrance to the Church, Roman walled grave.

Near Sant Agostino stretches the Capo market is a huge street market where you can plunge into the atmosphere of the past Palermo. Here you can see a variety of stores and buy fresh meat, fish and Souvenirs.

Interesting buildings of the quarter Macheda is the Villa Malfitana situated on the grounds of a walled Park near the Palace CISA. She is a typical 18th century mansion, built in the English style for the Whitaker family, merchants from Marsala. In different years this sumptuous Palace stayed members of the British, Neapolitan and Italian Royal families.

Definitely worth a visit and the Archaeological Museum of Palermo, which occupies several buildings near the Church of San Filippo Neri in Piazza Olivella. One of the buildings of the Museum with large arched Windows dates from the 13th century. The entire Museum complex preserves the artifacts Phoenician, Punic, Greek, Roman and Saracen periods of domination in Sicily. Here you can see some interesting artifacts brought back from Egypt and other countries of the world. Of particular interest are a large mosaic floor from the ruins of Roman buildings in Piazza Vittoria, lion heads of the Greek Church in the Chimera, sarcophagi from Villabate, various pottery and coins, as well as the so-called Palermo Stone. The latter was discovered in Egypt in the 19th century during an expedition sponsored by the Whitaker family, and had to go to the British Museum, however, for various reasons remained in Palermo. It is possible to see the engraved hieroglyphics depicting the life of Egyptian pharaohs.

Among the other noteworthy buildings of the quarter Macheda worth noting Castello al Mare – Castle by the sea, built by the Normans and destroyed during the second half of the 19th century, and the Opera Teatro Massimo in Piazza Verdi is one of the most famous in Italy.
