The ruins of Tulum Photo: the Ruins of Tulum

Tulum is a city of ancient Mayans erected in pre-Columbian times, was once the port for the city of Coba. Its ruins have been preserved on the Eastern side of the Yucatan Peninsula. Tulum, a towering 12-meter cliff, is considered one of the most well-preserved Mayan cities located along the coastline.

Earlier Tulum had another name, which means "city of dawn". From the Yucatec language "tulúm" is translated as "fence" or "wall". The name of this is justified – the walls erected around the city defended him from the attacks of hostile tribes.

The city told the American and English travellers in 1843 – John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood. Later studies allowed scientists to determine the approximate date of occurrence of Tulum – 1200 a year. The town survived until the first contacts with the conquistadors in the early sixteenth century. Since that time, the city gradually became empty and was completely abandoned by its residents by the end of the XVI century.

Defensive wall, height from three to five meters and a width of 8 meters, makes Tulum one of the most protected cities of the Maya. Construction of coastal Tulum typical of the Mayan culture. The buildings erected on pedestals, lead stairs. Large houses, typically supported by columns. In each of the rooms – one or two Windows, and the rear wall is the altar.

Tulum has always been protected on one side by steep cliffs jutting into the sea, and on the other wall, which reaches a height of 3-5 meters. Lateral part reaches 170 meters in length. This defense suggests that the city was very important to the Mayan people. In the South-West and North-West, scientists have found some buildings, probably used as a watchtower. The narrow passages were from the North and South side and one on the West wall. On the North wall there was a small cenote – a source of drinking water.

Another famous and interesting tourist building is the Temple of the frescoes. Here each of the two floors has a small gallery. On the facades of the Temple in the niches are statues of the "Descending God".

The city is open to tourists, it is included in the list of essential popular attractions among tourists Peninsula Utcan.
