Santiago Cathedral Photo: Cathedral of Santiago

Santiago Cathedral is the main Church of the Catholic Church in Chile. The temple is dedicated to the assumption of the blessed virgin. It is located in Central Santiago, overlooking the Plaza de Armas and Plaza Mayor. The architectural ensemble of the Cathedral consists of the Archbishop's Palace and the temple. All these buildings are considered national monuments since 1951.

The present Church is the fifth in this place. Four previous buildings were destroyed due to fire or earthquake. The construction of the new Cathedral was begun in 1748. It was curated by architect Butler Matias Vazquez Acuna, who decided to make the Church larger and more resistant to future earthquakes. The project of the facade of the Cathedral Toesca completed in the neoclassical style. In 1846 began the construction of a chapel under the direction of architect Eusebio Celli.

In the late nineteenth century Archbishop Mariano Casanova ordered a series of changes, transforming the Cathedral into the building we see today. For work, he invited the architect Ignacio Cremones in 1898. The new design of the temple was performed in a mixture of Tuscan and Roman styles. The roof is made in the form of a cylindrical arch supports. In front of the altar appeared choirs and free space for worshippers. The decor of the Cathedral is richly decorated with stucco, frescoes, icons and gilding. The ceiling in the aisles formed of small domes, one in each of the nave, which are separated from each other by arches. The Cathedral has a body, two chairs and an altar made of red wood.

The existing tower was replaced by two new ones. They divided the upper part of the facade, on which were the statues of St. John, the virgin Mary and St. Roch. The main altar was created in Munich in 1912, white marble with bronze decorations.

In the crypt of the temple lie the remains of all the bishops and archbishops of Santiago. Since the beginning of 2005 during the year there was a reconstruction of the main altar and the crypt. During this reconstruction was built a new tomb and small chapel.

In 2010, during the last earthquake, the building was again damaged. The Chilean government began the restoration of the facade in April 2014 and is planned to complete all work by the end of the year.
