The Church of St. Anne is located in the historical centre of Santiago de Chile at the intersection of Cathedral and St. Martin, and was built in neoclassical style, designed by Chilean architect Juan josé Goycolea in 1806.
In 1578, on this place was built the temple. The first Church building was destroyed in the earthquake of 1647. The newly erected Church building completely collapsed after another earthquake in 1730. In 1746 this place began construction of the third building of the temple, which was demolished in the early nineteenth century due to poor condition.
Another building of the Church of Santa Ana was built through the priest, Vicente Guerrero. When he arrived in Santiago de Chile as the rector of the parish of St. Ann in 1802, the building was almost completely destroyed after two fires. His dedication and relations parishioners were able to receive monetary support from the government to start the reconstruction of the building of the Church. The Church building was designed in the neoclassical style of Juan josé Goycolea, a student of famous architect Toesca. The construction of a new Church building, which we now can see, was begun in 1806, and it was consecrated in 1854, even before its completion.
Since 1926 for 10 years the Church has undergone significant changes. Remaked tower, nave and vaults of the building of the temple. However, now you can still see elements of the original construction of the temple in the neoclassical style. During the last strong earthquake in 2010, the building was again severely damaged and temporarily closed for restoration work.
The plan of the Church is made in the form of a Latin cross with two side chapels, which together with the Central part of the nave were built by Juan josé Goycolea. The temple tower consisting of three tiers, is located above the Central part of the temple. The tower is decorated with a clock and is topped by a spire. Inside the Church is the altar of work Fermina Vivacity and ancient marble font. Near St. Anne's Church there is a square with a beautiful fountain, around the square grow large centenarian trees.
In 1970 the Church of Santa Ana was included in the list of historic monuments of Chile.
