The Lepenica cave is 12 km from Velingrad, under the top of Sutka, in the West Rhodope mountains. The cave, the depth of which is 1525 meters above sea level 975 meters, has three levels: on the lower floor has an underground river flows, on average – the lake (in rainy weather formed four lakes, in dry or two), the third floor is dry, but getting there is impossible. The air temperature in the cave is around 10 degrees.
In the cave with many stalactites, stalagmites and stalaktones, creating a fancy composition and shapes. In the Museum of natural Sciences in Sofia exhibited cave pearls found in Lepenica, which is a unique natural phenomenon. Cave fauna is very diverse and interesting: animals recorded 24 species, of which 6 so-called troglobionts – animals that live only in caves. Bats living in Lepenica, 6 species.
In the town of Rakitovo, 10 kilometres from which is a cave, in 1930, was created a branch of the speleological society of Bulgaria, located in Sofia, for the study of Lepenica and other caves in the area. Earlier, in the years 1925-1927, Ivan Bures – academician and head of the work of the Royal museums of natural Sciences, held here biospeleological research. The first 400 meters of cave passages have been mapped in 1931, but thoroughly exploring caves began in 1973.
About 50 years Lepenica remained closed to tourists, but today it is very popular tourist site. The Lepenica cave received the status of natural attractions in 1960.
Now to visit the cave can group, numbering no more than ten people, with special equipment, under the guidance of an experienced guide.
