The island Tumski - the oldest part of Wroclaw, a former island on the river Oder. The island's name is translated as "Cathedral" - in honor of St. John the Baptist Cathedral, located on the island.
Archaeological excavations of the area have shown that the Western part of the island Tumski has been inhabited at least since the 9th century. At that time there were about 1,500 residents. The first structures were built in the 10th century by the Piast dynasty, and were made of wood. The first building of solid material - the chapel of St. Martin - built in the early 11th century by the monks Benedictines.
In the late 13th century in connection with the expansion of the city, on the island was built a defensive wall with two towers. In 1315 island with built castle was sold to the Church authorities. In 1382, the Czech king Wenceslas IV had put forward the idea of construction of a new Royal castle with towers, thick walls and a moat. The project was not supported, the island remained in the power of the Bishop.
In 1807, part of the fortifications and the moat were eliminated, since Tumski island ceased to be an island in a geographical sense.
During the Second world war, the island sustained major damage, also suffered and Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Restoration work was carried out in 70-ies of the 20 century under the leadership of Edmund Malashkevich.
