The fortress of Qaitbay is one of the main attractions of the city – was built on the site of Faroese lighthouse, the ruins of which became the material for its construction. Inside is the oldest in Alexandria mosque and the Naval Museum where you can see objects from shipwrecks in the area during the fighting. The fortress was severely damaged during the British bombardment in the late nineteenth century.

From the bastions of the fortress offers a magnificent view of the city and the sea.
