In the centre of Almeria, next to the city Cathedral is a complex of the hospital of St. Mary Magdalene. It is impossible to overestimate the historical significance of this building because it is the only survivor in the city building of civil architecture Dating back to the 16th century.
The hospital was originally named the hospital of St. Mary was built on the initiative of Bishop Diego Fernandez Villalona. The building was constructed in the period between 1547 and 1556 years is believed to be under the guidance of renowned Spanish architect Juan de Oreja. In the construction of the hospital was also attended by the famous architect Hernando de Salinas.
The hospital complex is represented by three buildings, directly by the hospital, chapel and orphanage, which form a single composition in the form of Latin U. Although some elements of the complex was rebuilt several times, the main facade, facing North, has remained unchanged since its construction. Mainly the building of the hospital complex in the style of the Renaissance, and its southern part, completed in the 18th century, created in the style of Neoclassicism. During the construction of the lower floor were used large hewn stones, the upper floor is made of smaller stones, and the corner portion of the brick.
The chapel, built in 1885, is a single nave, apse cross. Shelter, Dating from 1876, is a two-story building, which has four galleries that surround the patio.
