Palti bridge – the bridge over the river Avon in the English city of bath. Was built in 1773 and is under state protection as a monument of architecture.

There are only four bridges where the shops are located on both sides from coast to coast, Palti bridge is one of them. It is named after Frances Palti, heiress of the estate Batik located on the other Bank of the Avon, opposite Bata. It was an ordinary village, but her husband, Francis, William, decided to turn it into a modern settlement, a suburb of Bath. And above all he needed was a bridge connecting the two cities. With his idea of creating a new bridge William appealed to the architects of the brothers Robert and James Adams. Robert was fascinated by the construction of a new bridge, and he turned a simple project Palti in an exquisite building with rows of shops on both sides of the bridge. Adam was in Italy, and its design shows the influence of bridges Ponte Vecchio and the Ponte Rialto – especially the project Ponte Rialto, which was not realized.

In the form in which he created Adam, Palti bridge lasted only twenty years. In 1792 the appearance of the facades suffered due to the expansion of the stores, and the floods of 1799 and 1800 destroyed the Northern extremity of the bridge. In the nineteenth century, the shop owners completely redid their homes in its own way, and one of the houses at the southern end of the bridge was completely demolished.

In 1936 the bridge was listed in the list of monuments of architecture, and began restoration of the original appearance of the facades. The works were largely completed by the British festival of 1951. Now Palti bridge is one of the most famous attractions of Bath, famous for its masterpieces of architecture of the Georgian style. In recent years, the city Council discusses plans for the prohibition of traffic over the bridge and turning it into a pedestrian area.
