The temple of Earth is located in the North of Beijing in a huge Park Ritani among three churches. The largest among them is the Temple of Heaven.

The temple was built during the reign of Emperor of the Ming dynasty, in 1530. Today is a huge garden with flowering trees, lawns and flower gardens, situated in a densely populated location in Beijing.

The Chinese of ancient times believed that the essence of things lies in the four cosmic elements: sun, earth, moon, and sky. The temple of Earth has a square base and is located on the Northern side of the Park, because this part is connected with the Earth. The temple of Heaven, in turn, has a circular shape, implying the sky, and is situated in the southern part. All four of the temple, including the moon and the Sun are in the East and the West, interact in different spiritual directions. All four buildings are in China cultural monuments and protected by the state.

On the temple is an altar for sacrifice, which was used in the days of the summer solstice to calm the gods. This place was praying for the crops, good weather, about the welfare of the country. The altar in the heart of the temple is called "Fung TSE tan", meaning "water Altar" because before he was surrounded by water on all sides, the source of which to date, has dried up.

The temple complex consists of five buildings: Imperial house, Palace, warehouse, pavilion of sacrifice and the altar. Around all these buildings, various fruit trees, about 170, over the age of 300 years or more. The most popular trees are gingko, elm and juniper.

During the celebration of the Chinese New year, usually begins on the 1st day of the 1st lunar cycle of the year, in the Temple of Earth begins the famous festival. A lot of bright red lanterns hung on the trees, the lights are burning everywhere and thousands of people.
