The Rocca di Albornoz in Urbino locals often referred to simply as La Fortezza. An imposing building with fortified walls, looking towards the city from the top of the hill of Pian del Monte, was built in the second half of the 14th century under the leadership of cardinal Anglico Grimoard for best control over the city. In the same century it was strengthened by another cardinal Egidio Alvarez de Albornoz, whose name the fortress is today. This particular papal legate was responsible for the conversion of the majority of regions Marche, administered by the papal suzerainty.

Cardinal Albornoz decided that the old fortress, built during the reign of the Dukes of Montefeltro, did not meet the time requirements and its objectives, and therefore engaged in a serious alteration. However, in 1375, the year during the siege of Urbino, headed by Antonio da Montefeltro, who took advantage of popular unrest, and again took possession of the city, the building of the fortress was severely damaged. In the next century, La Fortezza more than once been attacked, was partially destroyed and rebuilt. All these events have changed the original structure of the fortress, and today it is a square structure with a steep-walled semicircular towers and ramparts. In the early 16th-century La Fortezza became the Northern Outpost of new defensive walls of Urbino, to which it was annexed by the architect Giovanni Battista Comandini. And in 1799, the year when the castle was occupied by French troops, held its reconstruction.

In 2010-m to year within the walls of La Fortezza was opened the Museum of arms of the 15th century. Tourists are attracted not only the ruins of the ancient fortifications and the Museum, but also breathtaking views of the hill, and extensive gardens landscaped around the fortress.
