The building of La Malmaison art on the Boulevard de La Croisette – like a fragment of the past. On this stretch of the waterfront there is a modern house, and "Malmaison" stands out among them architecture of the XIX century and small size.
His story is interesting. Once there stood a magnificent "Grand hotel", built in 1863 by the architects Vyana and Blondel. The building of the "Malmaison", which housed a casino and a tea room, was part of the hotel complex. The hotel, which enjoyed popularity among the European aristocracy, survived until the late fifties of the XX century, but was demolished after. In 1963 it was restored. However, to say that you can only conditionally architecture has changed, the current four-star "Grand hotel" looks boring. Although the comfort it certainly provides, and the hotel garden overlooking the embankment and adjacent to the "Malmaison", looks like a real oasis.
During the demolition of the hotel, they left untouched the building of the "Malmaison". In the early seventies, the town bought the building, to transform it into a new exhibition space. After repairs in 1983 and restored in 1993 the centre of La Malmaison art became well known on the French Riviera.
It annually hosts exhibitions of major artists of the last century, such as Matisse and Picasso, who sought inspiration in the French Riviera. In 2013, the granddaughter Marina Picasso has provided more than a hundred works of his great grandfather for the exhibition, which had great resonance. The arts center exhibits the work of contemporary artists. The interest retrospective exhibition of French photographer andré Villiers, who shot the greats – Picasso, Chagall, Le Corbusier, Dali, Fellini... Very impressive was the recent exhibition of the nice artist Patrick Moya "Civilization Moya" and the Italian sculptor Roberto Barney "Nothing for nothing".
Arts centre develops its own collection, including photographs by Lucien Clergue, Andre Villa, Lee Miller and other modern masters, as well as sculptures and paintings.
From November 2013 to April 2014 in the "Malmaison" the exhibition of engravings and etchings by Georges Braque, one of the founders of cubism.
