Not far from the monastery of the Holy Trinity is an Orthodox monastery of Gouverneto, also known as Lady of the Angels. This temple is on the Akrotiri Peninsula. There is an assumption that the monastery was built by a very rich man in 1548 (possibly in 1573), but to date the supporting documents are not found. Initially the monastery was built in the Venetian style, but the architecture of the monastery were added to some elements in the Baroque style.

In those days the building of the monastery was used including for defensive purposes. Externally, the monastery Gouverneto like a Palace with towers. It is surrounded by a massive fortress with 50 cells, which are located on two floors. In the middle of the courtyard there is a Church with two chapels, dedicated to the Ten saints. In the middle of the monastery yard there is a large number of interesting sculptures depicting monsters.

According to some historical sources, in the sixteenth century the monastery was ruled by the former sailor Mitrofanis Fusionis after serving in the Venetian fleet led a monastic way of life. The local authorities very respectfully he was treated and allowed to engage in organizational activities of the monastery. During the Venetian domination and leadership of Mitrofania of Posidonia it was one of the best monasteries in the territory of which lived about 50 monks.

In 1821 the monastery was attacked by the Turks. Majority of monks were brutally murdered, and plundered the monastery. During the Second World War, the monastery was almost destroyed by German invaders. In 2005, the monks resumed the recovery of Gouverneto monastery and the surrounding area in order to retain all the charm of this beautiful historic monument. Currently in the Gouverneto monastery is home to only 3 monk.

The monastery of Gouverneto is a very popular attraction of the island of Crete, which in the course of the year visited by a huge number of tourists from all over the world.
