The Venetian harbour of Chania is located close to the centre of the old town. During the Venetian domination of Chania was a highly developed city in the field of Maritime trade with well-established export and import, despite the absence of a large and safe harbour. The location of the Harbor was a great place to build and depended heavily on weather conditions. But the local government decided to build the port. The harbour was to be used for trading purposes and to control the water from the raids of pirates.
The Venetian harbour in Chania was built by the Venetians in 1320-1356 years. The Harbor was small and only rated for 40 galleys. No different she and depth. The North side is the Harbor protected by a breakwater, the middle of which there is a small area with the construction for the guns and a small chapel of St. Nicholas. At the entrance to the harbour is the Firka fortress, built in 1629. At the entrance to the fortress today houses the Maritime Museum of Crete. In this fortress December 1, 1913, was raised the Greek flag in honor of the unification of Crete with Greece. Above the entrance to the harbour also rises the majestic lighthouse, which in its current form was built by the Egyptians on the orders of Mehmet Ali in 1830-1840 Another attraction of the Venetian harbour is a Muslim mosque built in 1645 (one of the first Turkish buildings on the island) and is well preserved.
Today the Venetian harbour is a historical monument of the city and one of the favorite destinations of tourists and locals, and Chania serving port Court, located on the opposite side of the isthmus. Along the coastline there are many restaurants, bars and cafes. Here you can relax and enjoy Mediterranean cuisine, but also enjoy beautiful panoramic views. The old harbour is now used as a mooring for fishing boats and small excursion boats.
