Buynaksk historical Museum, located on Lenin street, the first Museum in the history of the Republic of Dagestan.

In the second half of XIX century healer regiment I. Kostamarovsky, having a solid collection of exhibits, is actively creating a Museum at the headquarters of the regiment. In 1891, all collected by the state, he bequeathed to the future of the Museum. The Museum financed Kostomarovskaja and called his name, opened in the fall of 1912 In the Museum there were 293 exhibit, including photos and documents. Photos were taken by renowned photographer Abuladze and brothers Runewiki, basically it was ethnographic material.

Initially, the Museum did not have its own premises, so it is temporarily placed in the house of the Governor-General. Over time, the Museum began to grow and allocated space was not enough, the result was redeemed wing in the mansion of the Princess Pavlova, located in the street of the Absheron.

In connection with the revolutionary events of 1918, the whole Museum was almost completely looted. Some of the most valuable items were saved by the Museum staff, taking them home. Gradually, the Museum resumed its activities. Until 1934 it was known as the Museum of the history of the revolution. After the resolution of the Council of people's Commissars of Dagestan in connection with the visit of the city "leader of the people" Stalin decided to create the house-Museum of Stalin. For this, the Museum was allocated a former hotel, transferred to S. Habeebu. He gave the Museum all the furniture, also there were taken all the preserved exhibits of the Museum of the history of the revolution.

In 1956 the Museum was given a new name - National Museum of history and revolution. In 1975, after the earthquake, the former hotel and the old Museum building was demolished.

In the post-perestroika period, the authorities decided to restore the Museum as a local history with the transfer to it of all the exhibits of the Museum of the revolution. Prior to 1993 the Museum was located in the former building of the first school. Since that time, the Museum is housed in a building that was built in 1916 and originally intended for the theater.
