Castle of Raby is located in County Durham, England. Known noble family of Nevilles settled in this place in the 13th century, and the castle can be found with remnants of the old fortifications, built in the year 1300. The very same castle was built by the third Baron Neville - John - in 1367-1390, In 1397, the son of John Neville, Ralph received from king Richard II the title of Earl of Westmoreland. In this castle was born Cecilia Neville, the mother of the future kings of England - Edward IV and Richard III.
Nevilles adhered to Catholicism and supported the Queen of Scotland Mary Stuart. However, the rebellion of 1569 against Queen Elizabeth failed and as punishment, all the land of Nevilles became Royal property. But after 43 years it was purchased by Henry vane, first Earl of Darlington, who owns another castle in County Durham. Around his previous castle - Barnard castle - rose is a bustling market town, and the Earl needed a different, more secluded residence.
In XVII-XVIII centuries the castle Raby often rebuilt and modernized: was a converted chapel of the middle Ages, has an octagonal living room and hall in the Gothic style. Work has also been done, allowing the owners to enter the castle in a carriage, but was thereby damaged the original appearance of a medieval castle.
Castle of Raby in the plan is an irregular polygon and consists of nine towers, the main entrance is on the Western side by a four-storey Gate Neville. In the East wing of the castle is the main hall, also known as the Hall of the Baron. Unchanged remained the donjon, and from the interior of the castle kitchen. The castle is surrounded by a Park with an area of 200 acres, which is inhabited by deer.
The family of Vanov acquired a huge number of paintings of famous artists, such as Pieter de Hoch, Luca Giordano, Anthony van Dyck and Joshua Reynolds. These and many other paintings, mostly family portraits, kept in the castle to this day.
At the moment the castle Raby is the residence of John Wayne, 11th Baron Barnard. The castle is open from may to September and at Easter.
