The biggest nature reserve in the Indian state of Goa, which covers an area of 240 sq km, is located on the border with Karnataka, on the slopes of the Western Ghats. The status of a protected zone bhagwan Mahavir received in 1969, and the Central part of its territory, which is approximately 107 km, in 1978, was named a National Park by Moll.

The reserve is known for the huge variety of flora and fauna. On its territory there are a large number of deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs. Due to the high humidity and the presence of permanent, perennial water sources for their crown so tight, and they grow so thickly that under them, due to the lack of sunlight, almost no grass grows. The predominant tree species are Terminalia, xylia, dalbergia and the crape Myrtle's.

Among the animal world's most famous inhabitants of the reserve became the Bengal tiger, leopard, porcupine, axis and many others. Also bhagwan Mahavir inhabits a huge number of birds, reptiles and insects, including rare and unique species.

For the reserve is also home to the famous dudhsagar waterfall, creepy Devil's Canyon and a wonderful, well-preserved temples that were built during the reign of the rulers of ancient Indian Kadamba dynasty (about 345-525 years).
