The oldest Church in Gorodets is located in the vicinity of Gorodetsky shaft, on the Volga river. The first mention of the Church of the Miracle of Archangel Michael refers to 1304. Here in the 13-14 centuries was a tomb princes. According to legend, the temple grounds are buried the son and grandsons of the legendary Prince Alexander Nevsky (Andrei Gorodetsky, Vasily and Mikhail Andreevich). In 1368, the temple was burned by lightning, was rebuilt by Prince Boris Konstantinovich and burned down again.
Brick Church building in old architectural style, extant, was built in 1707-1712, slightly away from the original wooden Church. The North aisle was added in 1860 in the name of the Grieving Mother of God, and two years earlier by the parishioners was erected a stone wall around the Church and Church cemetery.
In 1935 the Church of the Miracle of the Archangel Michael was closed until 1991. For several years, restoration work was carried out, the final part of which was a new painting summer Church (the chapel of the Archangel Michael) in 2009. Today the Church building, for more than three hundred years of history has preserved the pristine external appearance, is a historical landmark in the city of Gorodets and a monument of architecture of Federal value.
