The aqueduct is located near the city of Tomar, which is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal. The construction of the aqueduct was begun in the sixteenth century, and finished in the XVII century. The order for the construction of the aqueduct was given by the king of Portugal by Philip II, who at that time was the king of Spain. The aqueduct also called the monastery aqueduct and the monument of the time of the Spanish-Portuguese Union, when Portugal and Spain were United as a result of capture by Philip II Portuguese crown.

The aqueduct was built in order to establish the water supply in the convent of Christ, which is located at some distance from this monumental structure. Construction began under the direction of architect Philip the Third, and finished the construction of architect Pedro fernández Torres.
