The archaeological Museum of Poros Photo: the Archaeological Museum of Poros

On the island of Poros in the same city is a small but interesting Archaeological Museum. The Museum building is in the center, in Piazza Carisi.

Officially, the collection of antiquities of Poros was registered in 1959. In 1962, the exposition was placed temporarily in an old mansion, which was donated by the heirs of Alexandros of Corsica Greek state specifically for the Museum. Later the old building was demolished, and from 1966 to 1968, on this land was built a new Museum. Its doors for visitors to the Archaeological Museum of Poros opened only 10 years later in 1978. The exhibition is presented in two exhibition halls.

The artifacts presented in the Museum cover a fairly reasonable period of time, starting from the Mycenaean era until the Roman times. Here are a collection of artifacts found during archaeological excavations on the island of Poros (in ancient times was called Kalavria), including the temple of Poseidon, the ancient Tresini, from methana, Ermioni (Garmin), as well as artifacts from the shipwrecks in the Argo Saronic Gulf.

In the Museum's collection includes ceramics, funerary steles, sculptures, statues, ancient inscriptions, various architectural details, bronze ware and much more. Among the most important exhibits is to provide a Geometric amphora, found in Tresana, bronze vessels from the sanctuary of Poseidon, a clay figurine from the Mycenaean temple of Saint Constantine in from methana (1300-1200 BC), as well as part of an ionic column from the temple of Poseidon and a huge statue of Poseidon. Also of interest are the clay composition in the form of a lion head from the sanctuary of Aphrodite in Tresana and inscribed pedestal with a bronze statue of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (175-180 gg BC). The Museum also has a collection of photos from archaeological sites.
