The Monastery Of St. Elijah Photo: Monastery Of St. Elijah

The magnificent natural landscapes of the picturesque Greek Islands of Hydra, clear water of the Aegean, a fascinating history and lots of interesting attractions, and a well-developed tourist infrastructure annually attract large numbers of tourists from all over the world. Famous island of Hydra and its many beautiful temples (about 300 churches and 6 monasteries), among which special attention deserves the monastery of the Prophet Elijah is one of the most revered Orthodox shrines of the island of Hydra.

The monastery is situated on the picturesque slopes of mount Eros (588 m) at a height of just over 500 metres above sea level and offers magnificent panoramic views over the Saronic Gulf. However, it is worth spending a little more time and climb to the top of Eros, which offers more spectacular scenery. The road to the monastery from the town of Hydra (the administrative centre of the island) will take approximately 45 minutes. You can walk there (pre-make about comfortable shoes and water) or use traditional local transport – donkeys.

In the 70-ies of the 18th century on the site of the monastery was once a small Church, which was subsequently abandoned. Prophet Elias monastery as we see it today was built in the early 19th century by monks from the Holy mount Athos. In the monastery of the Prophet Elijah has its own excellent library, founded in 1870, the current rector Hierotheos Kostopoulos. Today the monastery is home to only a few monks.

In Greek history entered the monastery as a place where some time in prison spent hero of the Greek revolution, Theodoros kolokotronis.
Definitely worth a visit and located within walking distance of convent of Saint Eupraxia.
