The tomb of Zechariah and Bnei-Hezir Photo: the Tomb of Zechariah and Bnei-Hezir

The tomb of Zechariah and Bnei-Hezir grandiose monuments of antiquity, located in the Kidron valley, at the foot of the mount of olives. They are located near the tomb of Absalom, just South of it. Most often tourists wheeling past, but for the person interested in the history of Israel, the view from the tour bus a little: should come here on foot and see everything close up.

Resting on the edge of the great Jewish cemetery, the tomb of Zechariah is a monolith, it is carved from solid rock and does not contain a burial chamber. On the three-tiered base, typical of ancient Greek architecture, stands the stylobate with ionic half-columns, while the upper part of the monument, on the ledge in the Egyptian style, stands the pyramid. On the other hand, the tomb looks gross imperfection: it seems that the work on its decoration was suddenly interrupted.

Tradition connects the monument with the name of the old Testament prophet Zechariah, who was killed by the people: "And the Spirit of God clothed Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, and he stood on the dais before the people and said to them: thus saith the Lord: Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandments of the Lord? will not prosper you; and as you have forsaken the Lord, and He will leave you. And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king [Joash], in the court house of the Lord" (2 Chronicles 24:20-21).

However, the documentary evidence about where he was buried, the prophet, left, no body, the tomb could not contain due to the fact that it is a monolith, and archaeologists have dated it to I century, and Zechariah lived much earlier. It seems more logical version on which the construction is the soul (Jewish tombstone) for the nearby funerary complex of caves Bnei-Hezir.

The tomb of Bnei-Hezir ("benei Hezir") was used by several generations of a wealthy family of priests. The influence of Ancient Greece is clearly seen in the architecture of the facade: there are Doric columns, frieze and cornice. In the inscription in Hebrew buried here are listed the members of the family Heir. A corridor leads to the burial chamber, and special steps connect the tomb with the tomb of Zechariah.

Jewish tradition also believes that in these caves lived to retire due to his illness the king Azariah: "And the Lord smote the king, and he was a leper unto the day of his death and dwelt in a several house" (car 15:5). The Christian tradition believes that the tomb of Bnei-Hezir after the crucifixion of Jesus was hiding the Apostle James, and it was here that he was the resurrected Christ.
