The Lithuanian Museum of folk life is a Museum under the open sky, located in the town of Rumsiskes, about a fifteen minute drive from the city of Kaunas. The Museum was founded in 1966, but only in 1974 he opened the doors for visitors.
Rumsiskes is a Park of the Lithuanian folk culture. On the area of 175 hectares, you can see a recreated traditional village life of Lithuanians in the late XIX – early XX centuries.
The Lithuanian Museum of folk life similar to other museums of this type. In Ukraine is Pirogovo, in Slovakia and Poland – a large number of heritage parks, museums and Handicrafts. However, the similarity is noticeable only in the concept of the exposition, as all the exhibits on Rumsiskes site are unique witnesses and keepers of the amazing Lithuanian traditions.
The Museum presents 4 main historical area Lithuanian: Žemaitija, Suvalkija, aukštaitija and the new partnership. Main exhibits of the Museum are residential houses, commercial buildings and national technical monuments (over 140 facilities), served as the Lithuanian peasants at different times and for different needs. Houses, and the exhibits were brought in Rumsiskes from all over Lithuania.
Houses and other buildings set in a picturesque location at the Kaunas sea and the river Pravana. Some facilities for about 200 years and more. These buildings are witnesses of how people used to live, were able to build and equip your home in different periods. Buildings are grouped into manors and villages, and urban structures exhibited around the square.
Walking around the estates, you will be able to admire the orchards, gardens, fences, wells and much more. In many homes restored the interior with furniture, kitchen utensils, fabrics, rugs, tools of a period.
Interestingly, in some buildings, arranged current exhibitions, where there are wood carvers, weavers, potters and others. Anyone may at some time turn into Lithuanian craftsman: learn to spin the Potter's wheel, learn the basics of weaving skill or to try to cut wooden toy.
Exhibition hall of the Museum is the exhibition of the Museum's collections and solo exhibitions of craftsmen.

It regularly organises exhibitions of folk art. And in the summer you can become a participant of various festivals, fairs and folk festivals, where you can enjoy traditional Lithuanian music and to participate in national amusements. The Museum has a tavern where you can taste national Lithuanian dishes.
