The Temple Of Chaturbhuj Photo: The Temple Of Chaturbhuj

Located near a small but world-famous village Khajuraho, the temple of Chaturbhuj was built in honor of the Hindu God Vishnu. This ancient temple, which, according to scientists, was founded about the year 1100, also known as Datacare – the name of the village where is located. The word "Chaturbhuj" from Sanskrit translates as "one who has four hands" (referring to Vishnu, who has 4 hands).

The temple of Chaturbhuj is located three kilometres South of Khajuraho therefore belongs to the southern group of the famous temple complex of the city. Remarkably, Chaturbhuj is the only building of the complex, completely devoid of any of the sculptures and images of erotic and tantric nature. But this does not prevent him from being as popular as the rest of the temples of Khajuraho.

The temple stands on a high stone platform and, as usual for the buildings of this type consists of several parts: the mandapam – long exterior of the hall is a corridor, decorated with a colonnade and a large hall, which is the largest Shrine of the temple is a statue of four-armed Vishnu, carved out of stone and has a height of 2, 5 meters. In the two left hands of the idol are the Lotus and the shell, the upper right hand folded in a gesture expressing fearlessness, while the bottom – in a gesture of blessing. But, unfortunately, some time ago the lower arm was broken. In addition, in the hall there are also other statues of Vishnu depicting various entities, such as the statue of his avatar, Narasimha – half man-half lion.

The inner walls of Chaturbhuj covered with delicately carved images of lions, gods and demigods of Indian mythology.
