The Hayravank monastery, located in the eponymous village on the rocky shore of the amazing lake Sevan is one of the major Christian sites in this region.
The monastery was founded in the IX century Monastic complex composed of churches, chapels, built in the X century, and the porch linked to the Church in the XII century After some time on the East side of the Church chapels were built. Around the monastery there is a huge number of gravestones and khachkars, which are part of an ancient cemetery. The Church is built of roughly hewn stone.
The main entrance to the monastery is framed by a multitude of crosses that are already here many hundreds of years put on monastery walls pilgrims coming here. The entrance is not so richly decorated, as in other similar temples XIII-XV century, its Main decoration is a wide semi-circular band. The portal is closing the creaky door. Once directly over the precipice there was a second entrance, which led to a steep narrow path from the yard. Currently the entrance is blocked.
The light in the Church is through a narrow window openings. The architect probably used this light as an artistic effect to decorate rays of the sun, the interior of this dark temple.
The architectural appearance of a monastic building has the appearance of a rough draft of the Armenian churches of the XIII century There was a well marked some elements of the new style and the characteristic features belonging to the later temples. However, they are still very far from perfect. For example, the faces of the tent not yet acquired a natural curvature and still remain straight, because of what the drum looks unfinished.
From the monastery of Hayravank amazing views of the lake and its surroundings.
