Plaza de La Villa Photo: Plaza de La Villa

Plaza de La Villa is located in the historical centre of Madrid, next to Calle Mayor, close to the Royal Palace.

This small, cozy area, more like a small courtyard, has, nevertheless, of great cultural and historical value, since this area is facing facades with three significant artistic and historical point of view. The first one is a tower house “de Los Lujanes” is an example of Spanish architecture of the 15th century. The facade is decorated with a magnificent Gothic portal and heraldic emblems. The tower, made of brick and stone, is the most ancient part of the building. There are opinions that this tower was imprisoned by the French king Francis I during the war of Spain with France in the 16th century. Today this beautiful building is the Royal Academy of Sciences.

Also on the square is the house-Palace of the Casa de Cisneros, which is an example of a building built in the plateresque style. This house was built in 1537 and was the nephew of cardinal Cisneros. The facade of the building overlooking the Plaza de La Villa was restored in the early 20th century. On the main facade of the building facing the street Sacramento, managed to preserve the great architectural and decorative elements.

On the right side of the square is the Casa de La Villa, whose construction was started in the mid-17th century and lasted for 52 years. The building, constructed in the Baroque style, for many years served as a prison, then became the seat of the City Council. Special interest deserves the interior of the house is the Portrait hall, Goya, conference room, yard Glass, and others.
