Islands Selvazhensh is a small Portuguese archipelago located in the Atlantic ocean, between the island of Madeira and the Canary Islands. This archipelago consists of two main Islands and several islets of different sizes. The Islands are divided into two groups: Selvazhensh Grande (Big Selvazhensh) and Selvazhensh Pequena (Small Selvazhensh). Islands belong to Portugal, the office carried out from Funchal, and the territory included in the district Se district Madeira. The archipelago is surrounded by dangerous reefs and are considered to be the southernmost point of Portugal.
In 1971 the Islands were awarded the title of a nature reserve, as this is one of the most important places where there are nests of some species of seabirds, such as the Mediterranean Shearwater, which are considered endangered species, macaronesia Petrel. Also nest on the island the white-faced Petrel, madarsa the Petrel, Mediterranean gull, Canary skate and many other birds and reptiles, which are studied annual scientific expeditions. Sit here to relax and migratory birds, for example, Petrel of Bulwer.
Given the remoteness of the island and a limited supply of fresh water, as well as its status, the island is uninhabited. The island is only reserve staff and scientists that explore the wildlife of the Islands, as well as the staff of the naval forces of Portugal, which monitor the beacons on the Big Selvagens and Small Selvagens. Sometimes come to the Islands small group tours that have received special permission from the regional government of Madeira. Without this permission, the island is impossible to get.
Islands Selvazhensh was once a disputed territory between Spain and Portugal, but in 1938 the international Maritime Committee confirmed that the Islands fall under the jurisdiction of the Portuguese Republic. The estimated opening date of these Islands – 1438. But there is an assumption that the Islands were discovered earlier in the second half of the fourteenth century.
