Macerata Photo: Macerata

Macerata is the capital of the eponymous province in the Italian region Marche. The historic city center is situated on a hill between the rivers Chienti and Potenza. Once this place was a settlement of the tribe Piceno called Cause and after romanization named Helvia Recina. When the settlement was destroyed by the barbarians, the surviving inhabitants found refuge on a nearby hill, where he built the new city of Macerata. Today, the city whose population is about 43 thousand people, is not only the hill and the plain below. Between the two parts – top and bottom – there is a lifting message.

On the main square of Macerata Piazza della libertà, is an ancient Loggia dei Mercanti duplex with vaulted galleries, Dating from the Renaissance. From it begins the Corso della Repubblica, which leads to another square, Piazza Vittorio Veneto, where the luxurious Palazzo Ricci today are the city Museum and art gallery with works by Carlo Crivelli. Near it are remains of the Gothic bell tower of the 15th century, and the interior of the Cathedral designed by Cosimo Morelli. To the South of the town is the Romanesque Church of San Claudio al Chienti, built in the 14th century on the ruins of an ancient temple and eye-catching with its unusual shape.
