The sculpture is the author of "Faust" was created by the architect Willy Russ. However, this monument has withstood the horrors of the second world war. It was destroyed during the fighting, and the city for a long time without him. Only the stone with a commemorative plaque was announced to all curious that earlier on this very spot was a sculpture depicting a pensive Goethe, seated on a bronze bench.
At the end of XX century, the city's office had raised the issue of the restoration of the monument to the great poet in the same place. Was a competition among sculptors. As the future Creator of the sculptural composition was chosen Vítězslav Abel.
